Practical Chinese language credit courses serve to improve the listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of Chinese language learners. This series of courses is characterized by four levels of difficulty, and each course carries three credit scores. Three hours of class are held weekly. Target students are non-Chinese speaking foreign students or exchange students of NCHU.

 
Practical Chinese (I)
   
Suitable for students without any foundation in Chinese language.
    
Course material: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Vol. 1, Lessons 1–6
    
Course introduction: This course aims to build the foundation for beginners to learn to listen, speak, read, and write Chinese, and teaches students to use the Chinese language in daily life communication. The course begins with an introduction to basic hànyǔ pīnyīn and the principles of writing Chinese characters. Afterwards, students slowly learn commonly used Chinese words and practice using short question and answer structures, such as those used for personal introductions, family members, and shopping.
 

Practical Chinese (II)
    
Suitable for students who:
1. Completed Practical Chinese (I) or equivalent thereof;
2. Have a vocabulary of 200 words; and
3. Are familiar with hànyǔ pīnyīn and basic sentence structures.
    Course material: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Vol. 1, Lessons 7–12
    
Course introduction: This course is a continuation of Practical Chinese (I). The course content is focused on pronunciations, Chinese writing, and Chinese grammars. By practicing repeatedly, students will be able to learn daily conversations and express their thoughts on unfamiliar topics in short words. Completing the course is equivalent to reaching Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
 

Practical Chinese (III)
    
Suitable for students who:
1. Completed Practical Chinese (II);
2. Have a vocabulary of 460 words; and
3. Level A1 of CEFR or equivalent thereof.
    Course material: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Vol. 2, Lessons 1–6
    
Course introduction: This course is a continuation of Practical Chinese (I) and (II). The course content is focused on Chinese grammar (such as, comparatives, resultative complements, continuous aspects of a situation or action, asking about distance, and telephone conversations). Students who complete the course will develop basic conversational and communication skills and be able to solve everyday problems and describe personal views and events in detail.

 
Practical Chinese (IV)
    
Suitable for students who:
1. Completed Practical Chinese (III) or equivalent thereof; and
2.  Have a vocabulary of 700 words.
    Course material: Practical Audio-Visual Chinese Vol. 2, Lessons 7–13
   
 Course introduction: This course is a continuation of Practical Chinese (I) to (III), and targets intermediate learners of Chinese language.Through lectures, discussions, and practical exercises, students will become acquainted with various everyday topics in Chinese and also learn Chinese communication skills and daily Chinese conversations. Completing the course is equivalent to reaching Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
