Chun Shui Tang Bubble Tea Workshop: Experiencing Taiwanese Culture Through Language and Taste
On October 16, 2025, the Chinese Language Center of National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) organized a cultural field trip to the Chun Shui Tang Dadun Branch in Taichung, as part of the MOE’s 2024 Chinese Proficiency Enhancement Program for International Students.
The activity, titled “Bubble Tea DIY Workshop,” offered students a chance to explore the intersection of language learning and Taiwanese culture.
The workshop was hosted by an instructor from Chun Shui Tang, who began by introducing the brand’s history and explaining how Chun Shui Tang innovatively transformed Taiwan’s traditional tea culture to create the world’s first foam black tea and bubble tea.

The instructor also shared how Taiwan’s hand-shaken drink culture emerged and spread worldwide, allowing students to understand the cultural background and creativity behind this iconic beverage.
This experience directly connected with what students had been learning in their Chinese classes about tea culture.
In class, they learned about different types of tea—such as black tea, green tea, and oolong tea—and their unique characteristics.

During the workshop, they encountered and practiced everyday vocabulary in authentic contexts, such as words for “fragrant,” “sweet,” and “ice.”
Through interactive use of the language while making their drinks, students brought classroom learning into real-life cultural settings.
During the hands-on session, students used shakers to experience the process of creating the perfect foam.
From adjusting the ice ratio and tea strength to mixing creamer and pearls, each step required careful attention.
The classroom was soon filled with laughter and excitement as students proudly presented their own bubble tea creations.
One student cheerfully said, “Look at all this foam—I could work here!” while another commented that it was their first time making a drink they see every day in Taiwan—“It’s both new and so much fun!”

Through this activity, the Chinese Language Center hoped to help students deepen their understanding of Taiwan’s hand-shaken drink culture while learning Mandarin.
Today, Taiwan’s beverage industry continues to innovate with creations such as boba milk tea and white pearls, reflecting the spirit of creativity and cultural fusion that defines Taiwan.
Students not only practiced their listening and speaking skills in Chinese but also learned to appreciate Taiwan’s beverage culture from a new cultural perspective.
At the end of the event, the instructor presented each student with a certificate of participation and a mini shaker cup as souvenirs.
This class was more than just “learning Chinese”—it was living the language through culture.
Amid the fragrance of tea and bursts of laughter, everyone savored a truly memorable moment where learning and culture blended perfectly.
