NCHU Launches Summer Mandarin Study Tour—Faculty and Students from Three U.S. Universities Gather for a Cultural and Language Journey in Taiwan
NCHU Launches Summer Mandarin Study Tour—Faculty and Students from Three U.S. Universities Gather for a Cultural and Language Journey in Taiwan
This summer marks the official kickoff of one of the most exciting international language and cultural exchange events! With support from the Ministry of Education’s “Huayu BEST Program", National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) has partnered with the City University of New York (CUNY), Brigham Young University (BYU), and the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) to launch the 2025 Summer Mandarin Study Tour on June 2. A total of 54 faculty members and students from the United States have arrived in Taichung to begin their one- to three-month journey of Mandarin learning and Taiwanese cultural exploration.
Now in its third year, this international exchange initiative continues to deepen academic cooperation while broadening the scope and depth of intercultural engagement for students on both sides. This year’s program is stronger than ever—BYU has brought 33 students to Taiwan, CUNY is participating for the first time with its own student group, and UTD has sent two students, one of whom plans to enrollin at NCHU this September for a dual-degree master’s program.
At the warm and lively welcome orientation, NCHU Vice President and Vice President for International Affairs, Professor Ji-Jhong Chou, personally greeted the students with words of support:
“I hope that in the next three months, you will speak Mandarin courageously and explore Taiwan’s local culture. By the end of your journey, let’s be able to share reflections with each other in fluent Mandarin! Please also remember to take care of your health and safety—may this journey be both fulfilling and memorable.”
To help the students adapt quickly to life in Taiwan and improve their Mandarin skills, NCHU’s Chinese Language Center has prepared professional language courses and a variety of cultural activities. Local NCHU students are also serving as “language partners,” offering language practice and daily life support outside the classroom to promote deeper interaction and friendship.
During the first week, students participated in a series of immersive activities, including a cultural walking tour of Taichung’s historic districts, a hands-on experience making Taichung’s signature pastry—the sun cake—and a weekend trip to Sun Moon Lake in Nantou, where they learned traditional tea-making and explored Indigenous cultures. In just a few days, students were already deeply impressed by Taiwan’s rich cultural diversity.
NCHU’s Chinese Language Center remains committed to creating a high-quality learning environment that integrates diverse cultural experiences and supports international students in strengthening both their Mandarin proficiency and intercultural understanding. This summer study tour is more than just a language program—it is a gateway to discovering the richness of Taiwanese culture. We look forward to seeing each student leave NCHU with unforgettable stories and treasured memories.
中興大學優華語計畫暑期遊學團揭開序幕 三所美國大學師生齊聚中興，展開一場華語與文化的探索之旅
今夏最熱血的國際語言與文化交流活動正式登場！
在教育部「優華語計畫」的支持下，國立中興大學攜手美國紐約市立大學（City University of New York）、楊百翰大學（Brigham Young University）及德州大學達拉斯分校（The University of Texas at Dallas），於6月2日隆重揭開2025年暑期華語遊學團的序幕，共計迎來54位來自美國的師生，展開為期一或三個月的華語學習與臺灣文化探索旅程！
這場國際交流活動已邁入第三年，不僅持續深化學術合作，更拓展了雙方學生跨文化交流的廣度與深度。今年的陣容更勝以往──楊百翰大學今年率領33位學生來到臺灣，紐約市立大學首次組團參與，德州大學達拉斯分校亦派出2位學生參與其中，其中一位學生更計劃於今年9月入學中興大學，攻讀碩士雙聯學位！
在熱鬧溫馨的新生歡迎會上，中興大學副校長兼國際長周濟眾教授親自致詞勉勵新生：「希望大家在接下來的三個月裡，能夠勇敢開口說中文、探索臺灣在地文化，三個月後我們要能用流利的中文彼此交流、分享心得！記得隨時注意健康與安全，讓這段旅程不僅充實，也充滿回憶。」
為了讓來臺學生快速融入生活、提升語言能力，中興大學華語中心提供專業華語課程及多樣文化體驗活動，並安排本校學生擔任「語言學伴」，在課堂外協助語言練習、生活指導，促進深度互動與友誼交流。
開學第一週，華語中心即安排豐富多彩的活動，包括走訪台中市區歷史街區、品味在地文化特色、親手製作臺中特色傳統糕點「太陽餅」，更在週末前往南投日月潭，體驗親手製茶的樂趣與認識原住民文化，讓學生們在短短幾天內深刻感受臺灣的多元魅力。
中興大學華語中心將持續致力於打造高品質的教學環境，結合豐富多元的文化體驗活動，全面協助國際學生強化華語實力與跨文化理解力。這趟暑期遊學之旅，不只是學華語，更是打開認識臺灣文化的大門。期待每一位遠道而來的同學，都能在中興留下屬於自己的精彩故事與珍貴回憶！
